SYNOPSIS

A young Jamaican man leaves his island and 2 year old son, arriving in England in the winter of 1954. He’s en route to Canada. So what made him leave, and is 1950s England what he expected?

Listen to another excerpt from the book!

"Life According to Maas Roy" charts the funny, moving and sometimes tragic story of a man whose hopes are dashed as he’s drafted into National Service with her majesty's armed forces. He’s sent to the civil war in Cyprus, working the notorious Murder Mile, but lives to tell the tale.

Back on Civvy Street, Stanley Roy falls in love and marries - but fate deals him another brutal blow. But the old soldier takes that on the chin and becomes the type of strong, Black father we rarely hear about – an exceptional single parent to his daughter.

Unlike many of his peers who threatened to go back home, this man actually does. He builds a home with his own two hands and chooses to live off the land - but is soon compelled to share his visions for progress and development with his community because of the abject poverty around him. Imagine, it's 1989 and they still have no access to clean running water!

Fast approaching the age of 80, Maas Roy continues to lead by example, serving his fellow man. And today, this father and daughter griot team are proud to share this inspirational story with you - even whilst they prepare to write an exciting follow-up to "Life According to Maas Roy".
